Who Is Saudi Arabia’s ‘Sleeping Prince’? Celebrates 36th Birthday While in Coma for Nearly 20 Years

Digital Desk, New Delhi: Saudi Prince Al-Waleed bin Khalid bin Talal, often referred to as the “Sleeping Prince”, marked his 36th birthday last week. However, the occasion was bittersweet, as he remains in a coma that has lasted nearly two decades following a tragic accident in 2005.

Severe Brain Injury in 2005
The prince slipped into a coma after suffering a traumatic brain injury in a car crash in London in 2005. Since then, he has remained unconscious, dependent on life-support systems including a ventilator and feeding tube.

Momentary Movements Sparked Hope in 2019
In 2019, a slight movement in his fingers and a gentle nod of his head caught public attention and sparked fresh hope among well-wishers. However, no significant medical improvement has been reported since then.

Still Under Intensive Medical Care
Prince Al-Waleed is under continuous observation by a dedicated medical team at King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh. Doctors have noted minimal changes in his condition over the years, but remain cautious in their outlook.

Family Refuses to Give Up Hope
His father, Prince Khalid bin Talal, and mother, Princess Reema bint Talal, continue to live in hope of a miracle. Prince Khalid has repeatedly stated that he will never allow life-support to be removed, considering his son’s life a matter of divine will.

Outpouring of Prayers on Social Media
While no official statement was released by the family on April 18—his birthday—social media was flooded with prayers and wishes from around the world. People continue to express their faith and hope that one day the Sleeping Prince will wake up.
