Viral ‘Sharpie Lip Liner’ Trend Raises Health Concerns, Doctors Warn

A concerning beauty trend is making waves online as influencers promote the use of Sharpie permanent markers as a substitute for traditional lip liners. The so-called “Sharpie lip liner” trend, which has gone viral across social media platforms, involves individuals applying marker ink around their lips before topping it with lipstick or gloss.

While the trend is being praised by some for its affordability and ease, medical professionals are issuing strong warnings about its potential health risks.

What Is the Sharpie Lip Liner Trend?

The trend involves replacing cosmetic lip liners with Sharpie markers, which are not intended for use on skin. Influencers have begun sharing tutorials and videos where they outline their lips with different shades of permanent marker, claiming it lasts longer and saves money compared to regular makeup products.

This comes at a time when lip liners are enjoying massive popularity, with celebrity endorsements and high demand causing prices to rise. However, this cost-saving hack could come with dangerous consequences.

Doctors Warn Against Sharpie Lip Trend

Health experts are urging people to avoid using Sharpies or any permanent markers on their skin, especially near the mouth. Dr. Brooke Jeffy, a board-certified dermatologist in Scottsdale, Arizona, called the trend “concerning” and warned against participating.

“Permanent markers contain chemicals like xylene, toluene, and urethane resin, which can be harmful to human health,” she told Fox News Digital. These substances are typically found in industrial solvents and should not come in contact with skin or be absorbed into the body.

Some users have already reported adverse reactions including lip dryness, irritation, and an unpleasant chemical taste after trying the trend.

Even Sharpie’s official website clearly states that their products are not meant to be used on the skin. Despite this, many social media users continue to ask influencers for marker shade names as if they were actual makeup products.
