Veteran actor Pankaj Dheer, who won millions of hearts as Karna in B.R. Chopra’s epic series Mahabharat (1988), passed away on Wednesday after a long battle with cancer. He was 68. His cremation was scheduled for later in the day.
Actor Amit Behl, a close friend of Pankaj for over three decades, expressed his grief, calling the news “shocking” and “really sad.” Behl recalled that Pankaj had been unwell a few years ago but had made a recovery and returned to work. “I spoke to him about three or four months ago, and he was sounding fine. So this is quite a shock,” Behl added.
Pankaj Dheer became a household name with his powerful portrayal of Karna, the loyal and courageous warrior prince. His calm yet commanding presence, memorable dialogue delivery, and expressive screen persona made Karna one of Indian television’s most loved characters.
Producer and friend Ashoke Pandit confirmed the actor’s demise, saying, “He passed away due to cancer this morning. He had been in and out of hospital in the past months.” Pankaj is survived by his wife Anita Dheer and son Nikitin Dheer, who has also pursued a career in acting.
Early Career and Breakthrough
Pankaj Dheer began his acting journey with the 1981 film Poonam, which did not perform well at the box office. He appeared in several lesser-known films, including Sookha, Meraa Suhaag, Randam Varavu, and Jeevan Ek Sanghursh, which helped him hone his craft.
In 1988, he was cast as Suryaputra Karna in Mahabharat. His tall frame, intense performance, and ability to convey Karna’s loyalty, pride, and pain won him nationwide acclaim and transformed his career.
Versatile Career Beyond Television
