A deadly cloudburst hit the Dharali area of Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, on Tuesday afternoon. The sudden burst of rain caused flash floods that destroyed many houses, hotels, and homestays. At least four people have died, and several others are missing.
The disaster happened around 1:45 pm. Dharali is a well-known stop for visitors going to Gangotri. Many buildings in the area were damaged or buried under thick mud and stones.
Videos from the scene are being shared on social media. One chilling video shows a man trying to crawl out from heavy debris. Another clip shows people running as strong floodwaters sweep through. The videos have not been confirmed by officials.
Locals say the flood began after a cloudburst in the catchment area of the Kheer Ganga river.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared his condolences. “I am deeply saddened by the tragedy in Dharali, Uttarkashi,” he said in a post on X (formerly Twitter). “I spoke with Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami. Rescue teams are working hard. Every help will be given to the affected people.”
Rescue and relief efforts are still going on. Authorities have asked people in nearby areas to stay safe and follow official warnings.
