Uttarakhand Makes History With First-Ever High-Altitude Marathon At Adi Kailash

In a historic first, Uttarakhand hosted a high-altitude marathon at Adi Kailash, the sacred Himalayan site situated 14,000 feet above sea level in Pithoragarh district. The 60-kilometre “Adi Kailash Parikrama Run” was flagged off at 5 a.m. on Sunday in freezing temperatures and saw participation from runners representing 22 states across India.

Union Minister of State for Road Transport Ajay Tamta flagged off the event from Jolingkong to mark the 25th anniversary of Uttarakhand’s formation. The state observes its foundation day every year on November 9.

Speaking at the event, Tamta said that the marathon was inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to rejuvenate the Adi Kailash region, which often remains deserted during the harsh winter months. The initiative, he said, is aimed at keeping the area active year-round, benefiting local residents, pilgrims, and adventure sports enthusiasts alike.

He added that the success of the marathon reflects the Prime Minister’s goal of promoting sustainable economic activity in the state’s border villages. Tamta expressed confidence that such events would open a new chapter for winter tourism in the snow-covered Himalayas, drawing adventure seekers throughout the year.

The minister extended his gratitude to the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), the Indian Army, the district administration, and local communities for their support in arranging accommodation and facilities for participants in Gunji.

According to State Tourism Secretary Dheeraj Garbyal, over 580 runners aged between 15 and 60 took part in the marathon, braving extreme temperatures ranging from minus 9 to minus 14 degrees Celsius.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami congratulated all participants, organisers, and local residents on the successful conduct of the state’s first-ever high-altitude marathon. He described the event as a proud and historic moment for Uttarakhand, adding that holding such an ultra run at a sacred and spiritual site like Adi Kailash symbolises both courage and devotion.
