Starting September 1, two-wheeler riders in Uttar Pradesh will not be allowed to buy petrol unless they are wearing helmets. The month-long campaign, titled “No Helmet, No Fuel,” will continue till September 30 as part of a state-wide road safety drive.
The initiative will be implemented under the supervision of district magistrates in coordination with the District Road Safety Committees (DRSC). Enforcement will be carried out jointly by the police, district administration, and transport department officials.
According to UP Transport Commissioner Brajesh Narayan Singh, the campaign is backed by the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Section 129 makes helmets mandatory for both riders and pillion passengers, while Section 194D prescribes penalties for violations. He added that the Supreme Court’s Road Safety Committee has directed all states to prioritize helmet compliance.
Oil companies — Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum — along with petrol pump operators have been instructed to cooperate with the government in ensuring smooth implementation. The food and logistics department will monitor operations at petrol pumps, while the information and public relations department will run awareness campaigns.
“This is not a punishment but a pledge for safety,” Commissioner Singh emphasized. “Wearing a helmet is the simplest protection for life, and we appeal to citizens, fuel station operators, and oil companies to extend full cooperation.”
