Stray Dog Crackdown May Spread Beyond Delhi-NCR to Other States

The Supreme Court’s recent order to remove stray dogs from the streets of Delhi-NCR within eight weeks has sparked a chain reaction, with several states now considering similar measures despite protests from animal rights groups.

On Monday, the court directed that all canines be relocated to shelters and warned that anyone obstructing the process would face action. The decision came amid a surge in dog bite cases, but critics, including PETA India, have called the move “impractical, illogical, and illegal,” warning it could worsen human–dog conflicts.

Rajasthan
Hours after the Supreme Court ruling, the Rajasthan High Court issued interim directions to clear stray dogs and other animals from city roads and highways. Acting on a suo motu case, the Jodhpur bench ordered all municipal bodies to run special drives to remove strays, ensuring minimal harm to them.

Tamil Nadu
The Madurai bench of the Madras High Court indicated that Tamil Nadu should also follow the Supreme Court’s approach. During hearings on stray cattle issues, the court orally remarked that instructions would be issued to the state’s chief secretary to address the stray dog problem.

Uttar Pradesh
BJP lawmakers in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council raised concerns on Tuesday, saying stray dog attacks were creating fear across the state. They criticised municipal bodies and health departments for failing to tackle the issue, claiming even gated residential colonies had become hotspots for stray dogs.

Karnataka (Bengaluru)
Bengaluru authorities have also discussed new stray dog management plans, including microchipping to track vaccinations. However, civic body BBMP has struggled to find qualified vendors to carry out these programmes, stalling implementation.

Nationwide Debate
While supporters of the Supreme Court order see it as a much-needed safety measure, opponents argue that sudden mass relocation of community dogs will cause chaos, strain shelter facilities, and lead to more aggressive behaviour among displaced animals.
