Retired Air Force Officer Held in Assam for Suspected Links to Pakistani Spy Network

A retired Indian Air Force officer has been arrested in Assam over allegations of sharing sensitive information with individuals connected to a Pakistani espionage network. The arrest took place on Friday night after an extended period of monitoring by the police.

The accused, identified as Kulendra Sarma from the Patia area of Tezpur, was taken into custody following what authorities described as sustained surveillance and preliminary inquiry. Investigators reportedly recovered suspicious digital materials from his mobile phone and laptop, although some data appears to have been erased. According to Haricharan Bhumij, Deputy Superintendent of Police in Sonitpur, the evidence pointing toward Sarma’s communication with Pakistan-linked individuals is substantial, but the final confirmation will depend on the ongoing investigation.

Sarma previously served as a Junior Warrant Officer at the Air Force Station in Tezpur, one of the strategically important bases that houses key air assets including a Sukhoi 30 squadron. He retired from service in 2002 and later worked briefly at Tezpur University. Police are now examining the scope of his alleged activities and the nature of the information he might have shared.

The case has raised concerns in the region, and authorities have stated that a deeper probe is underway to determine the extent of the suspected espionage links and whether others may have been involved. The investigation will continue to focus on digital evidence and communication records as officers work to establish the full chain of events leading up to the arrest.
