Putin Emphasises India–Russia Strategic Independence and Energy Partnership During New Delhi Summit

Russian President Vladimir Putin reaffirmed the strength and long-term stability of India–Russia relations during a joint press briefing with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Friday. Speaking after their summit talks, Putin described the close economic and strategic partnership between the two countries as “entirely natural,” noting that bilateral trade is expected to expand further despite global geopolitical pressures.

Putin highlighted that both nations conduct foreign policy independently, stressing the importance of a multipolar world order. His remarks come at a time when India continues to face strong U.S. pressure to scale back its oil purchases from Moscow. Reiterating Russia’s commitment to meeting India’s energy needs, he assured Modi of “uninterrupted shipments” of fuel and reaffirmed Moscow’s role as a reliable partner in India’s energy security framework.

The Russian leader also voiced support for India’s Make in India initiative, stating that Russian companies are prepared to increase local manufacturing collaborations. He said cultural and educational exchanges between the two nations continue to grow, adding that the summit discussions further cemented their strategic partnership.

Energy cooperation featured prominently in his address, particularly Russia’s involvement in the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project. Putin noted that two of the six reactors are already operational and four more are under construction. Once completed, the facility will be India’s largest nuclear power plant and a significant contributor to the country’s clean energy goals.

Putin’s remarks come shortly after the United States imposed steep tariffs—up to 50 percent—on most Indian exports, citing India’s continued purchases of Russian oil as justification. India has repeatedly asserted its sovereign right to engage in trade that aligns with national interests, especially in the critical area of energy supply.

Prime Minister Modi expressed appreciation for Putin’s “unwavering commitment” to India, highlighting that energy security remains a foundational pillar of the bilateral relationship. Modi also announced that both sides have finalised an economic cooperation program extending to 2030. The roadmap aims to diversify and strengthen trade and investment flows across sectors including jobs, health, shipping and chemicals, ensuring growth that is both balanced and sustainable.
