The Punjab State Commission for Women has taken suo motu notice of objectionable lyrics targeting women in recent songs by popular singers Karan Aujla and Yo Yo Honey Singh. The panel expressed serious concern over the use of offensive language in Aujla’s song ‘MF Gabhru’ and Honey Singh’s track ‘Millionaire’, both of which have been widely shared across social media platforms.
In response, the commission has written to the Punjab Director General of Police, urging the appointment of a senior officer to investigate the matter and take appropriate legal action. The panel has also requested a status report on the action taken so far.
Taking the issue further, the commission has summoned both singers to appear before it on August 11 at its office to respond to the allegations.
Chairperson Raj Lali Gill stated that the panel is empowered under Section 12 of the Punjab State Commission for Women Act, 2001, to take independent action on matters that affect the dignity, rights, and safety of women. She emphasized that the language used in such songs contributes to a culture that disrespects women and must be addressed seriously.
The matter has stirred public debate, with many calling for accountability and stricter scrutiny of lyrics that can perpetuate harmful stereotypes or promote disrespect toward women.
