Passenger Recalls Shocking Airport Assault, Says Family Left Deeply Shaken

A passenger who was allegedly assaulted by a commercial pilot at Delhi airport has spoken out about the emotional toll the incident took on his family, describing the episode as deeply distressing and completely unexpected in a high-security public space.

“Something You Don’t Expect at an Airport”

Dewan said the confrontation began during the security screening process at Indira Gandhi International Airport, where airport staff had directed his family to use a priority security line because they were travelling with a baby stroller.

According to Dewan, a disagreement arose over instructions at the screening area, following which an Air India Express pilot allegedly made derogatory remarks and cut into the queue. What started as a verbal exchange, he said, escalated unexpectedly.

“I never imagined that a simple argument would turn physical, especially at an airport. This is not the kind of place where you expect someone to assault you,” Dewan told the channel.

Allegations of Physical Assault

Dewan alleged that after the initial verbal spat, the pilot followed him to the frisking area and struck him, leaving him injured. He claimed the incident occurred in the presence of security personnel and that no immediate intervention took place.

He also alleged that his wife overheard the pilot threatening to hit him moments before the assault, raising questions about how the situation was allowed to escalate despite the presence of security staff.

Airline Responds, Pilot Taken Off Duty

Air India Express has condemned the alleged behaviour and confirmed that the pilot involved has been removed from official duties pending further inquiry.

The airline said it is cooperating with authorities and reiterated its commitment to passenger safety and professional conduct.

Questions Over Security Response

The incident has also drawn attention to the role of airport security. Dewan expressed surprise that personnel from the Central Industrial Security Force did not step in immediately, despite the altercation happening in a monitored screening zone.

Officials have not yet issued a detailed public response on the security aspect, but sources say the matter is under review.

As investigations continue, Dewan says his priority remains the emotional recovery of his family, adding that the experience has left a lasting impact on them and shaken their sense of safety while travelling.
