Parliament has approved the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025, paving the way for setting up a new Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Guwahati. The Union government will provide ₹550 crore as capital support for the project.
The Rajya Sabha passed the bill on Wednesday, a day after it was cleared in the Lok Sabha. However, the proceedings saw uproar and a walkout by the Opposition.
Replying to the debate, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that the Guwahati campus will be the 22nd IIM in the country, and the 9th IIM established under the Narendra Modi government in the past decade.
Pradhan thanked Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for pushing the proposal and said the institute will be a game-changer for the Northeast.
“I am happy to see how the Northeast is progressing. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given strong support to the region. IIM Guwahati will open new opportunities not only for Assam but for the entire Northeast,” the minister added.
This will be the second IIM in the Northeast, after IIM Shillong, and is part of the special development package for Assam.
With the new institute, Guwahati is expected to strengthen its position as an educational and economic hub in the region.
