In a major move, OpenAI has banned multiple ChatGPT accounts associated with Chinese users, citing their involvement in generating spying tools, spreading propaganda, and participating in surveillance operations.
Spy Tools and Espionage Activities Exposed
A recent security report revealed that certain Chinese-linked ChatGPT accounts were being used to develop and distribute spy tools. These activities were part of an operation named ‘Peer Review,’ highlighting the risks of AI technology being exploited for espionage.
China-Linked Accounts Found Creating Propaganda
In another development, OpenAI identified and removed accounts used by Chinese operators to create and spread propaganda. These accounts were responsible for publishing articles in Latin American media, promoting anti-U.S. sentiment and amplifying political divisions.
AI-Powered Surveillance and Covert Operations
The banned accounts were also linked to surveillance and influence campaigns orchestrated by China, North Korea, and Iran. The use of ChatGPT for developing AI surveillance tools and manipulating content raises concerns about disinformation and covert state operations.
China’s Regulatory Measures on AI
In response to the growing use of generative AI, China introduced regulations in August 2023 aimed at controlling the content generated by AI platforms. The ‘Interim Measures for the Management of Generative AI Services’ seek to safeguard national security while ensuring that AI technologies align with social values.
These incidents underline the potential dangers of advanced AI systems being misused for harmful purposes, with OpenAI and Chinese authorities working to address these challenges on a global scale.
