A 37-year-old man allegedly drove his car into the Delhi Legislative Assembly on Monday afternoon to draw attention to his nephew’s missing case.
The accused, Sarabjit Singh, a resident of Pilibhit, was later arrested by police. He has been booked for breaking security rules and attempt to murder.
According to police, Sarabjit was driving a Tata Sierra SUV when he forcefully broke through Gate No. 2, which is meant for VIP entry, and entered the Assembly premises. After entering, he stepped out of the car and placed a flower bouquet in the vehicle of Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta, and then quickly drove away.
Police said his nephew has been missing since April 1, and a complaint was already filed at Hari Nagar police station. During questioning, Sarabjit said he believed that a senior official inside the Assembly would listen to his problem and help him.
Family members have claimed that Sarabjit is mentally disturbed. His wife has provided a medical prescription from Shahjahanpur, which police are currently checking.
After leaving the Assembly, Sarabjit reportedly paid two taxi drivers ₹2,000 to sit in his car and guide him through the city, as he was not familiar with routes in New Delhi. Police said he was even planning to go towards Parliament next.
He was finally caught around 4:15 pm in Roop Nagar, a few hours after the incident, following a city-wide alert. Two other people found with him have also been detained, but their role is not yet confirmed.
Police said Sarabjit was not carrying any weapon and had entered the complex alone. However, during custody, he showed aggressive behaviour, shouting and hitting the lock-up grills through the night.
Officials also said he had recently bought the Tata Sierra in February and is financially stable.
Police are now checking his call records (CDR) and continuing the investigation to understand his full motive and actions.
The incident has raised serious questions about security at high-profile government buildings in the national capital.
