A special Independence Day episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) is facing backlash after decorated officers from the Indian Armed Forces appeared on the show.
The episode, set to air on August 15, features Colonel Sofiya Qureshi from the Indian Army, Wing Commander Vyomika Singh from the Indian Air Force, and Commander Prerna Deosthalee from the Indian Navy. In the promo released by Sony TV, host Amitabh Bachchan greets the officers warmly as they share their experiences from Operation Sindoor — a mission against terror camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Pakistan after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.
Although it is believed the officers received official clearance to participate, the appearance has drawn criticism online. Many social media users have labelled it a “PR stunt” and “political mileage,” claiming it is inappropriate for serving officers to appear on an entertainment show so soon after a military operation.
Some critics accused the government of “using the armed forces for politics,” saying the military should remain neutral and above public relations campaigns. Others questioned if the appearance followed armed forces protocol, which discourages wearing uniforms in casual social venues except at official military events.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi also weighed in, pointing out that Sony Pictures Networks India — the parent company of the channel airing KBC — holds broadcasting rights for the Asia Cup cricket tournament until 2031, including India–Pakistan matches. She implied a link between the publicity and commercial interests.
So far, neither the government nor the defence ministry has issued a statement on the controversy.
