Karnataka’s Free Travel Scheme Sparks Political Clash As Dues Cross ₹4,000 Crore

A major political confrontation has erupted in Karnataka as the BJP and Congress trade sharp accusations over mounting unpaid dues linked to the state’s free bus travel scheme for women. With pending reimbursements to Road Transport Corporations (RTCs) reportedly crossing ₹4,000 crore, the dispute has intensified, raising concerns about the financial health of public transport services.

The BJP has alleged that the Congress government’s flagship “Shakti” scheme, which offers free bus travel to women across the state, is pushing state-run transport corporations towards financial collapse. BJP leaders argue that the government has failed to release timely compensation to RTCs, leaving them cash-strapped and unable to maintain buses, upgrade fleets, or cover operational expenses.

According to the opposition, the rising dues demonstrate “poor planning and fiscal mismanagement”, claiming that the Congress prioritised populist promises over sustainable funding models. They insist the mounting burden threatens thousands of jobs and the long-term stability of Karnataka’s transport network.

The Congress government, however, has firmly defended the scheme, calling it one of the most impactful social welfare initiatives introduced in recent years. Officials maintain that the programme has significantly eased travel costs for working women, students, and low-income families, boosting both mobility and participation in the workforce. They say payments to RTCs are being processed in phases, and accuse the BJP of attempting to “undermine a successful welfare measure that benefits lakhs of women daily.”

Transport department sources acknowledge delays but emphasise that the government is working to streamline reimbursement timelines and improve financial coordination with RTCs. They also point to rising ridership and increased public satisfaction as indications that the scheme is achieving its purpose.

As the political battle escalates, transport unions and economists warn that prolonged financial strain could affect service quality if not addressed promptly. With both parties standing firm, the issue is likely to remain a major flashpoint in Karnataka’s political landscape.
