Kargil War Hero Col Sonam Wangchuk Passes Away, Nation Pays Tribute

Decorated Kargil war hero Col Sonam Wangchuk (retd) has passed away, with tributes pouring in from across the country, including from Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and the Indian Army.

Col Wangchuk was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra, India’s second-highest wartime gallantry award, for his bravery during the Kargil War.

Expressing deep grief, Rajnath Singh described him as a “proud son of Ladakh”, praising his courage, leadership and dedication to the nation. He said Wangchuk’s actions during Operation Vijay inspired soldiers even in the toughest high-altitude conditions.

The Indian Army also paid tribute, calling him a brave soldier and a committed leader whose life stood for courage, service and unity. The Army extended condolences to his family and said his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.

According to his gallantry citation, then Major Sonam Wangchuk was leading a team of Ladakh Scouts in the Batalik sector on May 30, 1999. His unit was tasked with securing a strategic ridge line near the Line of Control at an altitude of around 5,500 metres.

During the mission, his team was ambushed by enemy forces from a higher position. Despite the difficult situation and loss of a fellow soldier, he held his team together and launched a bold counter-attack.

Leading from the front, he carried out a flank assault, killed enemy personnel and recovered weapons, including machine guns and ammunition. His action helped secure the area and stop further infiltration.

For this act of exceptional bravery and leadership under fire, he was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra.

Senior Army officials, including Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi, also paid homage, remembering him as a symbol of courage and patriotism.

The Fire and Fury Corps based in Leh also expressed grief, highlighting his key role in high-altitude operations and contribution to India’s success during the war.

Col Sonam Wangchuk is remembered not only for his bravery in battle but also for his strong leadership and commitment to duty. His life and service remain an inspiration for soldiers and citizens alike.
