ISRO, JAXA to Jointly Work on Chandrayaan-5, Announces PM Modi in Tokyo

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday confirmed that the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Japan’s space agency JAXA will collaborate on India’s upcoming Chandrayaan-5 mission.

Speaking at a joint press briefing in Tokyo alongside Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, PM Modi said the partnership reflects the growing strength of India–Japan relations. He noted that India’s space participation has gone beyond Earth and will stand as a symbol of human progress.

During the talks, both leaders highlighted the importance of strong democracies working together to shape a better future. Modi emphasized that India and Japan, as two of the world’s largest economies and vibrant democracies, must deepen cooperation not only for bilateral growth but also for global peace and security.

The joint statement released after the meeting underlined a commitment to strengthening economic, technological and security partnerships. Modi announced that India and Japan had laid the foundation for a new chapter in their Special Strategic and Global Partnership, setting out a roadmap for the next decade.

He further said that the plan includes an investment target of 10 trillion yen from Japan in India over the next ten years. Both countries will work more closely in semiconductors, rare earth minerals and advanced technology sectors. The partnership will also move forward with Digital Partnership 2.0 and a new Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Initiative, with special focus on connecting small and medium enterprises and startups from both sides.

Modi added that the shared vision for the future rests on investment, innovation, economic security, environment, technology, healthcare, mobility and deeper people-to-people ties.
