The Sashastra Seema Bal has arrested five prisoners from Nepal who had escaped from jail and were trying to cross into India. The incident took place along the India-Nepal border in Uttar Pradesh’s Siddharthnagar district.
Officials said the escapees were caught by SSB personnel during routine checking at a border outpost. They failed to produce any valid identity proof and were immediately taken into custody. On initial inquiry, it was found that they were among the prisoners who had escaped from the Dillibazar jail in Kathmandu a day earlier.
The arrested men were later handed over to the local police for further investigation and legal action. Authorities confirmed that the vigilance of SSB troops deployed on the border prevented the men from entering Indian territory.
The jailbreak in Kathmandu happened amid ongoing anti-corruption protests in Nepal, which saw widespread chaos and violence. A large number of inmates fled the jail during the unrest, forcing the Nepalese Army to take control of the area. Reports say police forces have pulled back from many parts of the capital, except their headquarters, as law enforcement struggles to maintain order.
The SSB, which guards India’s 1,751-km open border with Nepal and a 699-km stretch along Bhutan, has been on high alert since protests erupted across Nepal led by the Gen-Z movement.
