Ahmedabad Proposed as 2030 Commonwealth Games Host, Boosting India’s 2036 Olympics Ambition

India is set to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games (CWG), with Ahmedabad recommended as the proposed venue by the Commonwealth Sport Executive Board. The decision marks a significant step in India’s bid to host the 2036 Olympics.

The formal approval will be sought at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow on November 26. Ahmedabad and Abuja (Nigeria) were the only cities in contention for the centenary edition of the Games, which has faced challenges finding hosts in recent years.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, overseeing India’s Olympics bid, called the announcement a “day of immense joy and pride for India,” highlighting the country’s growing sports infrastructure and talent development under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

P T Usha, President of the Indian Olympic Association, emphasized that the 2030 Games would showcase India’s world-class sporting capabilities and inspire youth, strengthen international partnerships, and contribute to the nation’s Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.

India last hosted the CWG in 2010 in Delhi, an edition marred by planning delays and corruption allegations. Learning from the past, India aims to use the 2030 CWG as a platform to demonstrate its capability to host major international events ahead of the 2036 Olympics. Ahmedabad has already gained experience hosting events like the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship and the Asian Swimming Championship at the new Naranpura Sports Complex.

An IOA official noted that the 2036 Olympics host will likely be announced before the 2030 CWG begins, and India hopes to impress the global sporting community with timely, transparent preparation and world-class facilities.
