A Rocky Start for a Star Kid
Daughter of Bollywood veteran Anil Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor followed her father’s footsteps into the film industry. Despite having an 18-year-long career, she has had more flops than hits. Yet, one remarkable transformation—losing 35 kg for a film—helped her turn her career around.
Her Bollywood Journey Began Behind the Camera
While studying in London, Sonam got her first break when Sanjay Leela Bhansali came to shoot Black. With the help of her father’s recommendation, she joined the crew as an assistant director. Although she initially aspired to be a writer-director, working on Black sparked her interest in acting.
Debut With a Condition
Sonam made her acting debut in Bhansali’s Saawariya. However, Bhansali set one condition—she had to lose weight to be cast. At that time, Sonam reportedly weighed around 86 kg.
35 Kg Weight Loss for Debut Role
Determined to succeed, Sonam lost 35 kg before stepping in front of the camera. In interviews, she credited her mother’s support for helping her achieve the transformation. While Saawariya failed at the box office, Sonam’s presence was appreciated.
Four Box Office Failures in a Row
Post-debut, Sonam starred in Delhi-6, I Hate Luv Storys, Aisha, Thank You, and Mausam. Though I Hate Luv Storys earned well, others failed to impress, leading to a string of flops with Aisha, Thank You, Mausam, and Players.
Breakthrough With Raanjhanaa
Just when her career seemed doomed, Sonam bounced back with the 2013 romantic drama Raanjhanaa opposite Dhanush. The film became a hit and is still considered a cult classic.
From Comeback to National Award
Following Raanjhanaa, Sonam starred in several hits like Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Khoobsurat, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, Neerja, and Pad Man. Her role in Neerja earned her critical acclaim and a National Film Award, securing her legacy in Indian cinema.
