Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Kerala on Thursday evening ahead of the official inauguration of the Vizhinjam International Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport. He was received at Thiruvananthapuram Airport by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Union Minister George Kurian, and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor.

Vizhinjam Port: India’s First Deepwater Transshipment Terminal
On May 2 at 11 AM, PM Modi will officially inaugurate the Vizhinjam Port, built at a cost of ₹8,900 crore. Located about 14 km from Thiruvananthapuram, the port is India’s first deepwater transshipment terminal. Naturally 24 meters deep, it allows large container vessels to dock without dredging, offering a unique advantage over other South Asian ports.
Strategic Importance in Global Maritime Trade
Positioned just 10 nautical miles from international shipping lanes, Vizhinjam Port is poised to become a crucial hub in maritime trade between Europe and Asia. With the first phase of construction completed in December 2024, the official opening now signals the port’s operational readiness.
