India Becomes World’s 3rd Largest in Renewable Energy Capacity

India has ranked third globally in renewable energy capacity, after China and the United States, according to the latest data released by the International Renewable Energy Agency.

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi said that India has now moved ahead of Brazil in global rankings, marking a major achievement in the country’s clean energy journey.

As per the report (data till December 2025), China remains at the top with 2,258.02 GW renewable capacity, followed by the United States at 467.92 GW, while India stands third with 250.52 GW. Brazil and Germany follow behind.

The minister said India added 55.3 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity during the financial year 2025–26, showing strong growth in renewable energy.

He also highlighted that in July 2025, India recorded its highest-ever share of renewable energy in electricity generation. Renewables met 51.5% of the total power demand (203 GW) during that period.

Overall, India generated 1,845.921 billion units (BU) of electricity in 2025–26 (till March 2026). Out of this, 29.2% came from non-fossil fuel sources, including solar, wind, hydro, and nuclear energy.

In June 2025, India achieved a major milestone by reaching 50% of its total installed power capacity from non-fossil fuels, achieving the target five years ahead of its 2030 goal under the Paris Agreement.

As of March 31, India’s total installed non-fossil fuel capacity stands at 283.46 GW. This includes:

  • Solar power: 150.26 GW
  • Wind power: 56.09 GW
  • Bioenergy: 11.75 GW
  • Small hydropower: 5.17 GW
  • Large hydropower: 51.41 GW
  • Nuclear power: 8.78 GW

The government is now working towards its next big target of 500 GW non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030, as announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at COP26.

Officials said India is also planning new climate goals for 2031–2035, including reducing emissions, increasing clean energy share, and creating a large carbon sink.

This progress highlights India’s growing role in the global shift towards clean and sustainable energy.
