A tragic incident was reported from Karnataka, where a 27-year-old veterinarian lost her life after being attacked by a hippopotamus at a zoo in Shivamogga district.
The victim, Sameeksha Reddy, a resident of Bengaluru, was working on a contract basis at the Tavarekoppa Lion and Safari Zoo.
According to officials, the incident occurred late Thursday night. After completing a routine check-up on a Sun Conure bird around 10:30 pm, she proceeded to examine a pregnant hippopotamus at approximately 11:45 pm. While assessing the animal using a thermal camera, she was suddenly attacked.
She was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where she underwent surgery. However, she passed away on Friday morning during treatment.
Karnataka Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre termed the incident unfortunate and expressed condolences to the family. He assured that the government would provide compensation as per norms and support the family during this difficult time.
The minister also directed that veterinarians across all zoos in the state strictly adhere to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) while handling wild animals.
An inquiry into the incident has been ordered, with a team of senior veterinarians and forest officials tasked to submit a detailed report within seven days.
