Air India Clarifies Viral Claim About Flight Crossing Iranian Airspace

The Air India has dismissed viral social media claims suggesting that one of its flights crossed restricted Iranian airspace during heightened tensions in the Gulf region. The airline issued a clarification after an image circulated online alleging that a flight travelling from Frankfurt, Germany, to Delhi had flown over Iran despite ongoing conflict-related airspace restrictions.

According to the airline, the claim is false. Air India confirmed that the aircraft was actually rerouted via Saudi Arabia to avoid restricted airspace and ensure passenger safety. The airline stated that it strictly follows international aviation advisories and does not operate flights over restricted or unsafe regions.

In a statement posted on X, Air India said the image being shared online does not reflect its real flight operations or safety protocols. The airline emphasised that passenger and crew safety remains its highest priority, and all route decisions are taken based on real-time intelligence and continuous monitoring of global aviation advisories.

The clarification comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions following the conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. Military strikes and retaliatory attacks in the region have led to disruptions in air travel across several Middle Eastern countries, forcing airlines worldwide to reroute flights or suspend services temporarily.

Several airports in the Gulf region have faced operational disruptions due to missile and drone attacks. Major aviation hubs such as Dubai International Airport and Zayed International Airport experienced temporary closures after reported security threats and infrastructure damage. These incidents stranded thousands of travellers and caused multiple flight diversions and cancellations.

Meanwhile, Hamad International Airport has been affected by strikes targeting nearby infrastructure, leading to a temporary closure of Qatar’s airspace. Several countries in the region—including Iran, Iraq, Syria, Israel, Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait—have imposed full airspace restrictions, while nations like Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan have implemented partial or time-bound closures.

Amid the disruptions, Muscat in Oman has emerged as a key hub for evacuation and relief flights. Airlines including British Airways, Lufthansa, and SmartWings have used Oman’s relatively stable airspace to repatriate foreign nationals stranded in the region.

Air India reiterated that its flight planning process relies on a combination of real-time intelligence inputs, international aviation guidelines, and safety advisories to determine secure flight paths. The airline stressed that it remains committed to maintaining the highest safety standards during times of global uncertainty and rapidly changing airspace conditions.
