India Launches First Vande Bharat Sleeper Service for Overnight High-Speed Travel

India has taken a major step in modern rail travel with the launch of its first Vande Bharat sleeper train, marking the debut of high-speed overnight rail connectivity in the country. The new service was flagged off by Narendra Modi, introducing a faster and more comfortable option for long-distance passengers in eastern and northeastern India.

The sleeper Vande Bharat will operate between Howrah near Kolkata and Kamakhya Junction, offering an overnight journey that significantly cuts travel time on one of the region’s busiest routes. The train was flagged off from Malda Town, while the return service from Guwahati to Howrah was inaugurated virtually.

According to officials, the new sleeper variant has been designed to combine speed with the comfort of a premium hotel-like experience on rails. Though engineered for a top speed of 180 kmph, it is expected to operate at an average speed of 120–130 kmph, ensuring both efficiency and safety on existing tracks. The introduction of this service is expected to reduce travel time on the Howrah–Guwahati route by around two and a half hours.

Passenger comfort has been a key focus in the train’s design. The sleeper coaches feature ergonomically designed berths supported by an advanced suspension system, aimed at delivering a smoother and quieter ride during overnight journeys. The fully air-conditioned coaches are complemented by modern interiors that mirror the comfort standards of airline cabins.

Hygiene and safety have also been prioritised. The train uses advanced disinfectant technology capable of eliminating up to 99 per cent of germs, along with fresh linens and towels provided to passengers. On the safety front, the indigenous Kavach automatic train protection system has been installed, supported by comprehensive onboard surveillance. Automatic sliding doors remain shut while the train is in motion and open only at stations, enhancing passenger security.

Adding a unique touch to the travel experience, the Vande Bharat sleeper train will serve regional cuisine as part of its onboard catering, which is included in the ticket price. Passengers travelling from Kamakhya to Howrah will be offered Assamese dishes, while those heading in the opposite direction will enjoy Bengali cuisine, highlighting local flavours along the route.

The train offers three classes of travel—3AC, 2AC and 1AC—with fares ranging approximately from Rs 2,300 to Rs 3,600 for a one-way journey. Railway officials say the pricing is aimed at providing a premium yet affordable alternative to long-distance air and conventional train travel.

With the launch of the Vande Bharat sleeper service, Indian Railways has signalled its intent to transform overnight journeys, combining speed, comfort and regional character while strengthening connectivity between key eastern and northeastern regions of the country.
