Kollam (Kerala): Tragedy struck the hostel of the Sports Authority of India in Kerala’s Kollam on Thursday after two minor girls undergoing sports training were found dead inside a hostel room, police said.
The victims, aged 17 and 15, hailed from Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram districts respectively and were enrolled as residential trainees at the SAI centre. Their bodies were discovered around 5 am when fellow hostel residents noticed that the girls had not turned up for the morning training session.
According to police, repeated attempts to contact them failed, prompting hostel authorities to forcibly open the room. Both girls were found unresponsive inside. Emergency services were alerted immediately, but they were declared dead at the scene.
Officials said the 15-year-old trainee, a Class 10 kabaddi player, was officially allotted a different room but had stayed overnight with the 17-year-old, an athletics trainee studying in Class 12. Other hostel residents reported seeing the two girls together earlier that morning.
Police confirmed that no note was recovered from the room. A detailed investigation has been initiated to ascertain the circumstances leading to the incident, and statements from hostel staff, trainees, and family members are being recorded.
Senior officials of the Sports Authority of India and local administration have been informed, while counselling and support arrangements are being made for other hostel inmates.
Authorities said further details will be shared after completion of preliminary inquiries.
