Celebrities Condemn Brutal Lynching in Bangladesh; Demand Accountability and Solidarity

A wave of outrage has swept through India’s entertainment community following the brutal lynching of 30-year-old garment worker Dipu Chandra Das in Mymensingh, Bangladesh. As videos of the incident circulated online, a number of Indian actors took to social media to express anger and call for justice, highlighting broader concerns about rising communal violence in the neighbouring nation.

Horrific Incident Sparks Outrage

Last week, Dipu Chandra Das was attacked by a mob near Dhaka. Disturbing footage from the scene showed the victim being beaten, tied to a tree and burned, prompting shock and disgust across South Asia. The graphic nature of the violence drew comparisons to other global injustices, with many voices urging people not to turn a blind eye.

Janhvi Kapoor Calls Out ‘Selective Outrage’

Actor Janhvi Kapoor shared a detailed post decrying what she described as “hypocrisy” in the way such acts are publicly discussed. She emphasised the need to recognise and condemn violence against minorities, regardless of where it occurs.

Kapoor stressed that communal discrimination and extremism must be challenged everywhere, and urged her followers to equip themselves with knowledge and stand with innocent lives caught in communal strife.

Solidarity Messages from Other Celebs

Several other public figures also voiced solidarity with Bangladesh’s Hindu minority, drawing attention to perceived increases in threats and violence:

  • Kajal Aggarwal shared a stark poster on her Instagram story that depicted the violence and urged Hindus to “wake up,” warning against silence in the face of brutality.
  • Jaya Prada, actor and former Member of Parliament, appeared visibly emotional in a video message. She condemned the lynching as an “attack on the Hindu religion” and questioned the lack of wider attention being paid to such incidents.

Calls for Justice and Broader Dialogue

The responses from celebrities have sparked wider discussion among social media users and commentators, with many people debating how communal violence and minority persecution are addressed in South Asia. While some stress the importance of holding perpetrators accountable, others emphasise the complexities of social and political tensions in the region.

As pressure grows for a transparent investigation and justice for Dipu Chandra Das, voices from across the subcontinent continue to call for empathy, awareness and action against communal violence wherever it occurs.
