Schools, banks and several government institutions across Meghalaya remained closed today as the state observed a public holiday in remembrance of Pa Togan Nengminza Sangma, one of the earliest freedom fighters from the Garo Hills. The day is marked annually to honour his courage and sacrifice during the first organised resistance against British forces in the region in 1872.
Sangma, celebrated as a symbol of indigenous resilience, led a daring nighttime attack on British troops stationed at Matcha Rongkrek. Armed with shields fashioned from plantain stems, he and his fellow warriors attempted to overpower the colonial soldiers while they slept. Despite their ingenuity and determination, they were ultimately defeated by the British army’s superior firepower. His death is remembered as a defining moment in the Garo community’s struggle against colonial rule, and the state government commemorates the date as a tribute to his legacy.
To mark the occasion, cultural events, memorial gatherings and educational programmes are being held across Meghalaya, highlighting Sangma’s contributions and the historical importance of the uprising he led. The state government routinely declares the day a holiday in recognition of his role in India’s early freedom movement.
In related updates, the Meghalaya Board of School Education has announced a revised schedule for Class 11 internal and practical examinations. Originally set to begin on December 12, 2025, the exams have now been postponed to December 15. The decision ensures that academic activities align with today’s state-wide observance and ongoing preparations across institutions.
Students in the state are also gearing up for the upcoming festive period, as Christmas, New Year celebrations and winter vacations promise an extended break from regular academic routines. With today’s holiday and the approaching festivities, December is set to offer Meghalaya’s students a welcomed pause from their school schedules.
