Mitchell Starc Makes History with 10-Wicket Haul in Perth Ashes Test

Mitchell Starc has once again proven why he is one of the most lethal fast bowlers in world cricket, delivering a historic performance in the first Ashes Test at Optus Stadium, Perth. In the second innings of the match, Starc claimed a remarkable ten-wicket haul, finishing the game with figures of 10 for 113 and becoming the first Australian seamer in 35 years to achieve this milestone in an Ashes Test.

Australia faced a challenging situation after being bowled out for 132 in their first innings, allowing England to seize early control. However, Starc’s brilliant bowling helped bundle England out for 164 in their second innings, leaving the hosts with a target of 205 runs in the final innings.

Starc Joins an Elite List

The left-arm pacer’s ten-for was capped by the dismissal of England’s Ben Stokes, who edged a short-of-length delivery to Steve Smith at second slip. This marked Starc’s 11th dismissal of Stokes in Test cricket, highlighting his consistent dominance over the English all-rounder.

With this performance, Starc now joins an elite group alongside Craig McDermott, whose 11 for 157 at the WACA in the 1990-91 Ashes was the last ten-wicket haul by an Australian fast bowler against England. Starc’s match figures of 10/113 are also his career-best against the English side.

On Day 1, Starc had already made his mark with seven wickets, and his three-wicket effort in the second innings ensured he controlled the game whenever he bowled. Despite the absence of Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, Starc maintained his aggressive approach, prioritizing wicket-taking over economy. “It’s always been my role to be aggressive, look for wickets…. I’ve never been one to worry about economy rates,” he explained after his opening-day performance.

A Test to Remember

As the Perth Test enters its final phase, the contest remains tense. England have set a challenging total, while Australia aim to chase down 205 runs. Starc’s ten-for has already secured him a place in Ashes history, and the performance will be remembered as one of the most outstanding individual feats at Optus Stadium.

Regardless of the final outcome, Mitchell Starc’s record-breaking display ensures this Ashes Test will be talked about for years to come.
