‘Introvert, wasn’t that kind of man’: Family of Dr Umar Un Nabi, suspect in Delhi blast case

The family of Dr Umar Un Nabi, the suspect linked to the deadly explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort, has expressed disbelief over his alleged involvement in the terror attack that killed at least 13 people and injured more than 20 on Monday evening.

Dr Umar Un Nabi, a doctor at Al-Falah Medical College in Faridabad and a resident of Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir, is believed to have been driving the Hyundai i20 that exploded near the Red Fort. Investigators suspect he played an active role in transporting and planting the explosives. He is also believed to have died in the blast.

Speaking to ANI, Muzamila, Nabi’s sister-in-law, said, “They (security forces) have picked up my husband, brother-in-law and mother-in-law for questioning. We last spoke to Umar on Friday. He wasn’t that kind of man. We faced many struggles to get him educated.”

She described Nabi as a quiet and introverted person who rarely socialized and focused only on his studies and work. “He called on Friday saying he was busy with examinations and would return home after three days. He was reserved since childhood,” she added.

Nabi had reportedly last visited home two months ago and was recently engaged. “We worked hard so he could stand on his own feet and take care of us. I can’t believe all this. He didn’t have many friends, only used to study,” said Muzamila.

Investigators revealed that CCTV footage showed the car parked near Sunehri Masjid for nearly three hours before the blast, which took place around 6:52 pm.

Preliminary findings by the Delhi Police suggest that Nabi might have transported the explosive materials—suspected to be ammonium nitrate mixed with fuel oil and detonators—from Haryana to Delhi. Officials have linked the incident to the recently busted terror module in Faridabad, where 2,900 kg of explosive materials were seized.

The Delhi Police have registered a case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), and the investigation has now been handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Police sources said Nabi allegedly worked with another doctor, Adeel Ahmad Rather, a former senior resident at Government Medical College, Anantnag, who was arrested last week in connection with the same terror network.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been briefed on the situation and has assured that those responsible for the blast will be brought to justice.
