A 21-year-old Indian man, identified as Jashanpreet Singh, has been arrested in the United States for causing a deadly highway crash in Southern California that killed three people and injured several others. Singh, reportedly an illegal immigrant, faces charges of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
According to US media reports, Singh drove his semi-truck into slow-moving traffic on a San Bernardino County freeway, triggering a fiery collision. Dashcam footage showed his Freightliner truck crashing into an SUV without braking. Among the victims were three people who died on the spot, while others, including Singh and a roadside mechanic, sustained injuries.
Police confirmed that Singh was under the influence of drugs at the time of the accident. “Our officers determined he was driving under the influence of drugs,” said CHP Officer Rodrigo Jimenez. Toxicology tests later confirmed the impairment.
Authorities said Singh illegally entered the US through the southern border in 2022 and was released under the Biden administration’s “alternatives to detention” policy. The US Department of Homeland Security has now confirmed that Singh lacks legal immigration status, and an immigration detainer has been lodged against him.
The case follows another fatal crash in August involving Harjinder Singh, another Indian illegal immigrant, accused of causing a similar accident in Florida that killed three people. The incident has reignited debates in the US about border security, immigration policies, and commercial driving regulations.
