Heavy Rain Lashes Delhi-NCR; IMD Issues Orange Alert, Airport Warns of Possible Flight Delays

Heavy rainfall drenched Delhi and the surrounding NCR region on Tuesday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an orange alert for multiple parts of the capital. The department cautioned residents about moderate to heavy rain accompanied by light thunderstorms and lightning at wind speeds reaching 30–40 km/h.

The IMD’s nowcast warnings covered a wide area, including North, North-East, Central, South, South-East, and New Delhi, as well as Gurugram. Neighboring regions such as Sonipat, Kharkhoda, Farukhnagar, Bagpat, and Khekhra were also placed under alert.

Additionally, light rain and thunderstorm warnings were issued for several districts across Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan, including Kurukshetra, Panipat, Rewari, Narnaul, Shamli, Firozabad, Kotputli, and Dholpur.

The capital had already witnessed showers earlier in the day, with overcast skies indicating more rainfall ahead. The minimum temperature was recorded at 21°C, about 1.3 degrees below normal, while the maximum temperature is expected to hover around 35°C, according to the weather office.

At 9 a.m., Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 68, placing it in the ‘satisfactory’ category, as per data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

Amid the inclement weather, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport issued an advisory warning passengers about potential flight disruptions. “Due to inclement weather conditions in Delhi, flight operations at Delhi airport may be impacted,” the statement said. The airport authority urged passengers to check with their respective airlines for the latest updates and suggested using the Delhi Metro or other public transport options to avoid road delays.

With the IMD predicting continued moderate to heavy rainfall, residents have been advised to stay indoors where possible and exercise caution while traveling.
