PM Modi Inaugurates ₹9,000-Crore Development Projects in Mizoram, Calls Northeast India’s Growth Engine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched and inaugurated multiple infrastructure and development projects worth over ₹9,000 crore in Mizoram, reaffirming his government’s commitment to making the Northeast a key driver of India’s growth.

Addressing the people virtually from Lengpui Airport, after his scheduled visit to Sipai Lammual in Aizawl was disrupted by bad weather, the Prime Minister said, “Those who were once neglected are now being brought to the mainstream. For the past 11 years, we have worked tirelessly for the development of the Northeast, and today the region has become the growth engine of India.”

Among the key projects inaugurated were the Thenzawl–Sialsuk Road, Khankawn–Rongura Road, and a 30 TMTPA LPG bottling plant by IOCL at Mualkhang. Modi also inaugurated Mizoram’s first railway line — the Bairabi–Sairang section — along with the new Sairang railway station. The Prime Minister flagged off three new long-distance trains, including the Rajdhani Express connecting Aizawl to Delhi, a significant boost to connectivity.

He also laid the foundation stone for the Aizawl Western Bypass Road (45 km) and the Chhimtuipui River Bridge on the Lawngtlai–Siaha Road. The bridge, part of the Kaladan Multimodal Transit project, will improve links to Mizoram’s southern districts, sharply reducing travel time to Aizawl.

In the sports sector, Modi announced the Khelo India Multipurpose Indoor Hall, saying Mizoram’s talent in football and other sports deserves modern infrastructure. “Our Khelo India and Khelo Niti initiatives will provide new opportunities to the youth of Mizoram,” he said.

On economic reforms, the Prime Minister highlighted the impact of GST reductions, noting that soaps earlier taxed at 27% are now at just 5%. He stressed that the poor and middle class are among the biggest beneficiaries of the “One Nation, One Tax” system, as essential goods and healthcare have become more affordable.

“Healthcare and insurance were once out of reach for ordinary families under the Congress rule, but today our government has made them accessible to all,” Modi added.

He also underlined India’s economic momentum, announcing that the country’s GDP grew 7.8% in Q1 of FY 2025–26, the fastest among major global economies. “From September 22, cement and construction materials will be cheaper, vehicle prices have already come down, and this festive season will be even more vibrant,” the Prime Minister said.
