A torchlight march by Koch-Rajbongshi students in Golakganj, Dhubri, demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, turned violent on Wednesday night after clashes with police. Several students were injured, and the All Koch-Rajbongshi Students’ Union (AKRSU) called a 12-hour bandh on Thursday.
The rally, which began at Chilarai College and was heading to Golakganj Bazaar, was stopped by police and paramilitary forces. Students allege they were beaten despite the march being peaceful.
Shops, markets, and roads in Dhubri remained shut during the bandh. Security across the border district was also tightened.
The Koch-Rajbongshi community, along with five others — Tai-Ahom, Chutia, Matak, Moran, and Tea Tribes — has long demanded ST recognition, saying it would protect their land, culture, and rights.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma suspended the Golakganj police officer in charge and ordered an inquiry into the incident. “Anyone guilty of using force will face action,” he said.
Opposition leaders condemned the crackdown, accusing the government of ignoring promises to grant ST status. Student groups have warned of more protests if talks are not held soon.
