The dispute over late businessman Sunjay Kapur’s thirty thousand crore rupees estate has reached the Delhi High Court and has become a battle between his former wife Karisma Kapoor and his third wife Priya Sachdev Kapur.
On Wednesday, Karisma’s two children, Samaira and Kiaan, filed a civil suit seeking a share in their late father’s estate. In their plea, they alleged that their stepmother Priya Sachdev Kapur had tried to forge their father’s will.
During the hearing, senior advocate Vaibhav Gaggar, representing Sunjay’s mother Rani Kapur, told the court that the real fight was not so much about Rani Kapur’s share but between Karisma Kapoor and Priya Sachdev. He said whether there is a will or there is no will is the central issue, and while Rani Kapur is impacted, she will file her response in due course. He added that she has been made defendant number three as a class one heir of Sunjay Kapur.
On the other side, senior advocate Rajiv Nayar, appearing for Priya Sachdev, argued that the case against her is not maintainable. He told the court that Karisma’s children are already trust beneficiaries and had received one thousand nine hundred crore rupees just a few days before the case was filed. He said it is not true that they were left with nothing, and he emphasised that Priya is a widow with a six year old child. According to him, for fifteen years Karisma’s side was not present and suddenly they have come forward now.
Sunjay Kapur, a Delhi businessman known for his polo interests, married Karisma Kapoor in 2003. The couple had two children, Samaira in 2005 and Kiaan in 2011, before separating in 2016. He later married Priya Sachdev in 2017.
Sunjay died on 12 June this year while playing a polo match in England. It was reported that he suffered a heart attack after swallowing a bee, though this was never officially confirmed. His sudden death and the massive size of his estate have now led to a bitter legal fight in the family, with questions over the presence or absence of a valid will.
