Explosions Rock Doha as Israel Targets Senior Hamas Leaders

Multiple explosions were reported in Qatar’s capital, Doha, on Tuesday after Israel confirmed it had carried out a targeted strike against senior Hamas leaders based in the city.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF), along with its internal security agency ISA, said the operation was a “precise strike” against Hamas’s top leadership, including Khalil al-Hayya, the exiled Gaza chief and a key negotiator. “For years, these members of the Hamas leadership have led the terrorist organization’s operations, are directly responsible for the October 7 massacre, and have been orchestrating the war against Israel,” the Israeli military said in a statement.

The attack marks one of the boldest moves by Israel, as Hamas’s political bureau has long been headquartered in Doha. Qatar has played a central role as mediator in indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas, particularly in efforts to secure a Gaza ceasefire and the release of Israeli hostages.

Israeli officials emphasized that “precise munitions and additional intelligence” were used to minimize civilian harm. Even so, the strike is expected to sharply escalate regional tensions and complicate ongoing ceasefire talks.

Qatar’s government strongly condemned the strike, calling it a “cowardly act” against officials on its soil. Iran also denounced the attack, describing it as a “gross violation of international law.” By contrast, Israel’s Finance Minister praised the move, calling it “the right decision.”

Meanwhile, the US Embassy in Doha issued a “shelter in place” advisory for American citizens, urging them to avoid travel and stay indoors until further notice.

The situation remains fluid, with no official confirmation yet on the fate of the targeted Hamas leaders.
