The Indian Railways is preparing to launch the country’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper Express, a next-generation train designed to make long-distance travel faster and more comfortable. Unlike the existing Vande Bharat chair-car models, the new train will feature sleeper berths, modern interiors, and advanced safety systems, making it ideal for overnight journeys.
According to reports, the inaugural route will connect New Delhi and Patna via Prayagraj, completing the journey in just 11.5 hours. This will be a major upgrade from the current travel time of 12 to 17 hours on the busy corridor, which sees a surge of passengers during festivals as people travel between Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and the national capital.
The service is expected to begin before Diwali 2025. The train is likely to depart Patna at 8 pm and reach New Delhi by 7:30 am the next day. Fares are projected to be 10 to 15 per cent higher than the Rajdhani Express. Built to run at a maximum speed of 180 km per hour, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express will replace traditional seats with sleeper berths, offering better comfort for overnight travel.
The train will come with features such as CCTV surveillance, LED infotainment screens, automatic sensor-based doors, advanced fire safety measures, and onboard announcements. Its interiors have been designed with an aircraft-style finish to give passengers a premium travel experience. The sleeper model has been manufactured using Integral Coach Factory technology by Bharat Earth Movers Limited.
In addition to the Delhi–Patna service, Indian Railways is planning to introduce Vande Bharat Sleeper Express trains on routes such as Delhi–Ahmedabad and Delhi–Bhopal. With its speed, safety, and comfort, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express is expected to ease congestion, improve travel efficiency, and set new benchmarks for long-distance rail travel in India.
