Manipur Govt Appoints Martyred BSF Constable’s Brother as ASI in State Police

The Manipur government has appointed Chingakham Naoba Singh, the younger brother of Vir Chakra awardee Constable Deepak Chingakham, as an assistant sub-inspector in the Manipur Police.

Constable Deepak Chingakham, serving with the 7th Battalion of the BSF, lost his life on May 12 after sustaining critical injuries during a Pakistani drone attack in Jammu district’s RS Pura area amid Operation Sindoor, India’s counter-offensive against terror infrastructure in Pakistan and PoK following the April 22 Pahalgam terror strike that killed 26 people.

A government statement late Friday night said the appointment was made “in recognition and honour of his late brother’s supreme sacrifice in the line of duty during Operation Sindoor.”

The move came after the martyr’s father requested suitable state employment for Naoba Singh, opting to forego an offer from the BSF so his son could remain closer to the family during this difficult period.

Additionally, the Governor in Council approved an enhanced ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh to the family under the Major Laishram Jyotin Singh, Ashok Chakra (Posthumous) Ex-Gratia Scheme.

Constable Deepak was among two BSF personnel — along with Sub Inspector Mohammed Imteyaz — who displayed exemplary courage during intense shelling and drone strikes at the Kharkola border outpost in Jammu. Despite suffering grievous injuries, Chingakham refused evacuation and continued fighting from his post, an act of bravery that earned him the Vir Chakra, India’s third-highest wartime gallantry award, posthumously.
