Renowned cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Abhijat Sheth has officially taken charge as the new Chairperson of the National Medical Commission (NMC), the top regulatory body for medical education and practice in India.
Dr. Sheth currently also serves as the President of the National Board of Examinations (NBE). With this dual role, both major regulatory bodies—NMC and NBE—now come under his leadership. He continues to practice as the Director of Medical Services at Apollo Hospital, Ahmedabad.
A highly respected figure in the field of cardiothoracic surgery, Dr. Sheth has built a long and distinguished career with a strong academic and clinical background in India and the UK. He has authored more than 20 peer-reviewed research papers, including in Annals of Thoracic Surgery, delivered over 40 presentations, and participated in international conferences hosted by the British Thoracic Society, European Respiratory Society, and World Congress of Bronchology.
Appointment Confirmed by Union Cabinet
The Appointment Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved Dr. Sheth’s appointment on 11 July 2025, following a recommendation by the Union Health Ministry. He takes over the role from Dr. B.N. Gangadhar, who was serving as the officiating Chairperson of the NMC after holding earlier posts, including President of the Medical Assessment and Rating Board.
The Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions has cleared Dr. Sheth’s appointment for a term of four years or until he reaches the age of 70, whichever comes earlier.
Focus on Governance, Access, and Quality
Speaking to Medical Dialogues, Dr. Sheth acknowledged the challenges ahead, stating:
“It is a huge responsibility and it’s challenging. We need to focus on improving quality, access, and strengthening governance and teamwork. These will be the key priorities.”
