Seven senior military officers will be awarded gallantry medals on August 15 for their bravery during Operation Sindoor, sources told NDTV. Four Indian Air Force officers will receive the Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medal, the country’s highest wartime distinguished service award. This is the first time since the Kargil War that the IAF will be honoured with this medal. It is considered the wartime equivalent of the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, which recognises distinguished service of the most exceptional order.
In addition to the four IAF officers, two Army officers and one Navy officer will also be honoured during the Independence Day celebrations.
About Operation Sindoor
Operation Sindoor was carried out from May 7 to 10 as a response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 tourists, including one from Nepal. Under the operation, India targeted terrorist and military facilities in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
BSF Personnel Also Recognised
Earlier in the day, the Border Security Force announced that 16 of its personnel will receive gallantry medals for their courage and commitment during the operation. The BSF, which guards the India-Pakistan border, said the medals were a testament to the nation’s trust in its “first line of defence.”
Among the BSF awardees are a deputy commandant, two assistant commandants, and an inspector. The force described their actions during Operation Sindoor as “conspicuous bravery” and “unmatched valour.”
